General FAQs

HOW DO I BOOK A PHOTO SHOOT WITH YOU?

1. First, just complete the contact form. The first steps are often the ones that hold us back, but don’t worry, it will be worth it.
2. I’ll then get back to you to arrange a chat about the photo shoot and to answer any of your questions. It is important you have a chance to chat to me as I want you to feel comfortable with me as your photographer.
3. If you’re super happy, then we will book the date and location in the diary, and I’ll send you a booking form.
4. Completion of the booking form and payment of the session fee will confirm your booking.

My calendar does get filled up, so do see if you can arrange your date with me as soon as you feel a photo shoot is for you.

HOW MUCH WILL IT ALL COST?

Photo shoot session fees are £175 (separate pricing for weddings).
The session fee includes the 2-hour photo shoot at the agreed location plus one free high resolution digital image from the shoot.
Additional images and packages are available for purchase. Please visit my pricing page to find out about all the packages available.

WHAT IS YOUR STYLE OF PHOTOGRAPHY?

I love working outdoors; my style of photography makes the most of natural light and our interaction with nature. Outdoor locations are ideal for many of my photo shoots, particularly for children, families, couples, and maternity. However, newborn photo shoots do lend themselves better to home and studio sessions.

I love capturing natural emotions and expressions, and for you to feel relaxed and comfortable. My sessions are very free flowing and they organically evolve; I will gently direct at times but only to capture the natural you.

We will discuss the ideal location for you at the time of booking, but please do let me know your ideas when completing the contact form.

ARE GIFT VOUCHERS AVAILABLE?

I do have photo shoot vouchers which are wonderful as gifts for friends and family. Just message me and I’ll arrange the rest for you.

CAN I BOOK MORE THAN ONE SESSION?

Absolutely. Knowing and trusting a family photographer is an important step in making sure you get the photographs that you can treasure. I have loved photographing couples and maternity photo shoots, and then be privileged to be able to photograph their newborns and children as they grow up.

Before the Photo Shoot

HOW SHOULD WE PREPARE FOR THE PHOTO SHOOT?

Once you have your photo shoot booked, we will discuss how you can get the best out of the experience. I will go through what to wear, locations for the photo shoot, and what time works best for lighting. Our initial conversation will also allow us to get to know each other to help you feel relaxed and happy throughout the experience.

There is a blog on clothing, and each of my portfolio pages has an FAQ section specific to that type of photo shoot.

WHAT TIME OF THE DAY IS BEST?

Mornings and later afternoons are ideal times of the day for photo shoots.

Morning light is soft and gentle, and very flattering for portraits, and also a great time for newborns and young children as they are full of energy and very playful.

Midday sunlight can be very bright and harsh, providing better natural lighting for photo shoot in the home

Late afternoons and evenings in late spring, summer and autumn can often provide beautifully warm natural light, and so ideal times for couples, family, and maternity photo shoots.

WHAT IS THE BEST SEASON FOR A LOCATION SHOOT?

I photograph children, couples, families, and weddings throughout the year. Each season has something very special to offer with the different natural light and flora. Studio photo shoots can be booked for any time of year, no matter the weather. I have written a blog to give you an insight into the unique experiences and photographic results a photo shoot in each season can provide.

SHOULD WE HAVE A SESSION AT HOME OR OUTDOORS?

This is something we can discuss as it really depends on what you want from your photo shoot, and sometimes a combination of both can work. Being outdoors provides natural light, space for the children/family/couples to feel relaxed, and free to roam around interacting with nature; perfect for most photo shoots. However, I find it best to have newborn sessions in the home, but outdoor photo shoot for newborns can be arranged as well.

If you would like a photo shoot in the home then we can discuss your requirements and the best time of day depending on when and where your house gets the best natural light.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NATURAL LIGHT AND STUDIO LIGHTING?

Photo shoots outdoors benefit from natural light, and at certain times of the day the light is soft on skin tones, and very flattering. My photographic gear on outdoor photo shoots will simply be my camera, a reflector and natural light. You have the freedom to move around and I can follow, making tiny adjustments quickly to my position to get the best photographs.

Studio lighting, on the other hand, provides for a more static photo shoot experience and gives me certain control that reliance on natural lighting does not permit. Studio lighting environments work well when you don’t need to move around; perfect for maternity and newborns where a quiet, warm environment is welcomed, and it’s not weather dependent.

WHAT AGE IS BEST FOR A NEWBORN SESSION?

As a mother I appreciate how incredibly fast children grow up; and when to organise a photo shoot for your newborn can be difficult to decide. I have written a blog to go through the changes babies are likely to exhibit at different stages during their first 12 months, but here is a quick guide.

Within the first 2 weeks is the best for a newborn photo shoot; just before their growth spurt around 10 days old is ideal. They will still be able to curl up in the foetal position, and they sleep a lot at this age. Perfect for the sleepy close ups and of tiny hands and feet.

At six weeks is another great time for a newborn photo shoot, as babies will generally be more alert and open-eyed at this point, often beginning to smile and still tiny and gorgeously cute.

At 3 months babies tend to show more expressive emotions, smiling and laughing, and interact with their parents and engage with strangers. Great time for cute chubby hugs, close up of eyes and more playful photo shoots.

At 6 months you might want to enjoy family portraits as babies tend to be able to sit at this age, and therefore more varied poses in the photos shoot without the issues associated with babies that can crawl, head down and out of shot.

At 9 months babies will be crawling and possible have strength in legs and balance to be able to stand whilst holding on to your hand or furniture.

And at 12 months, crawling and standing with assistance might well be turning into their first steps. More noticeably for a photo shoot, your 12 month old baby will be engaging more with you as they respond to your suggestions.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME FOR A PREGNANCY SESSION?

The simple answer is that it depends on you and the balance between how big your belly is and how comfortable you feel. Generally, the best time for a maternity shoot is from 7-8 months, when the belly is visible enough. Some maternity shoots are very close to the due date, so it is a personal choice that we can discuss to ensure you enjoy the photo shoot experience.

During the Photo Shoot

WHAT HAPPENS IF IT RAINS OR I/WE ARE ILL?

We must always plan for adverse weather, and not to worry if it does rain on the day of your photo shoot. We can stay inside or head into the outdoors as planned as rainy photos can be just as beautiful. And think of the additional colour and accessories we can use, from hats and brollies to gloves and wellies.

As a mum, I’m more than aware that you can’t plan for an illness, but I can help you rearrange at a time that best suits. Just let me know as soon as you can.

WILL YOU DIRECT US HOW TO POSE?

I might direct you gently to guide you into more flattering positions, more so in a studio environment, but my style is trying to get you not to pose, evolving the photo shoot organically as you interact naturally. If you would like a photography where everyone is looking at the camera, then let me know and I’ll ensure some are captured.

WHAT SHOULD WE WEAR?

Keeping it simple and comfortable are key. I have written a blog that will help guide you, and a Pinterest Board for ideas.
Above all, these six top tips will help:
1. Avoid logos and cartoon characters
2. Add layers and textures
3. Think classic
4. Be inspired by your surroundings
5. Create flowing movement with dresses and scarves
6. Match to anyone else in the photo shoot

WHAT SHOULD WE BRING ON THE DAY?

What you bring on the day does depend on the location, type of photo shoot, and time of year/day. I will send you a list of things to bring in our pre-photo shoot call, but for outside sessions the fundamentals include blankets, snacks and water (more than you think you need if children are involved), a change of clothes, favourite toys (if for children), and items for adverse weather (brolly, wellies, and raincoat). Oh, and more snacks. So important to keep children energised and involved for the 2-hour session.

ARE PETS WELCOME?

Of course. Pets are more than welcome; they can make a wonderful addition to a photo shoot. We can chat through how we approach this for your photo shoot before the session.

WHERE DO THE SESSION TAKES PLACE?

My preference is always natural light, unless specific studio photo shoots are required. I love natural light and we will use as much as possible whenever it is available. Children and family photo shoots are wonderful in outdoor locations, with the freedom of movement and interaction with nature, but home and studio based sessions also work well. Newborn sessions work best at home, but a good alternative is at the studio. Maternity sessions can be spent at home or outdoors, depending on how comfortable you are feeling. And locations that are meaningful to you both are lovely for couples.

We will discuss what you’d like from the photographs and this will help guide us in the best location for the photo shoot. See my favourite locations for outdoor photographs.

HOW LONG WILL OUR SESSION LASTS?

Photo shoot sessions lasts up to 2 hours. This is more than enough time to capture beautiful, natural images, whilst also allowing time for snacks and changes of clothes (or nappies). If you would like more time then please let me know when booking.

MY CHILDREN ARE VERY ACTIVE/ SHY. CAN WE MAKE THEM LOOK NATURAL IN THE PHOTOS?

Photo shoots need to be fun, relaxing, and in a trusting environment where natural emotions, interactions, and feelings are captured. I have years of experience photographing fidgety children and camera-shy couples. I love photo shoot sessions that are not forced, but the pace set by you, gently guided by me, and a fun-filled experience. The techniques I’ve learned and developed over the years help to ensure you feel relaxed, comfortable, and being yourself. I will never make you feel silly, but I will make you smile.

WHAT IF MY BABY HAS A BAD DAY?

Don’t worry at all. I’ve been there as a mother and understand that babies might not work to our schedule. That’s ok. The photo shoot sessions have a lot of slack built in, so there will be enough time for feeds, changing nappies if needed, and settling your baby. I can provide tips and guidance on the day that might help.

After the Photo Shoot

HOW DO I CHOOSE MY PHOTOGRAPHS AFTER THE SESSION?

I will send you an email a week after the photo shoot has taken place with a link to a secure, online photo gallery and the password for you to access this gallery. The email will also include instructions on how to select your preferred images in this gallery and how to purchase them.

HOW MANY IMAGES DO YOU TAKE DURING THE SESSION?

I expect to capture, on average, anything between 50-150 images in a 2-hour photo shoot, depending on a variety of factors. I focus on capturing the moments that matter and the natural emotions and interactions as the session evolves, rather than looking at my camera to get to a certain number of shots.

HOW MANY IMAGES DO WE GET?

I will send you the link to the secure online gallery with the images from your photo shoot. You will be able to choose one high resolution image for free as part of your session fee. Any other images you select will be available for purchase. Please view the image packages for more details.

WHEN WILL THE PHOTOGRAPHS BE READY?

I’ll send you the link to your password-protected online gallery a week after your photo shoot session, or up to three weeks after a wedding.

DO YOU EDIT AND RETOUCH THE IMAGES?

Yes, I will edit (colour correction and cropping if required) and gently retouch photos before they go on your password-protected online gallery. More intricate editing and retouching can be done on photographs on request, charged at an hourly rate.

DO YOU PROVIDE RAW FILES?

I do not provide you with the RAW files as these are not my finished product. I know how I want the finished product to turn out and I choose my camera settings accordingly. The high-resolution, edited and print-ready jpeg files are my finished product.

CAN WE ORDER AN ALBUM?

Not quite yet. More details coming very soon…

CAN I SPECIFY HOW MY PHOTOGRAPHS ARE SHARED?

Your privacy is important to me. The booking form I send to you to complete includes information on how and where your photographs can be shared. If you do not wish me to use your photographs on my website or social media then you have the option to state this at the time of booking.
